The Mullett Arena in Tempe, AZ is a 5,000-seat arena on Arizona State University’s main campus. Additionally, the Sun Devil Men’s Ice Hockey & ASU Club Hockey Teams play in the arena. Music, comedy, wrestling, and more are also featured at Mullett Arena.
The Arizona Coyotes NHL Hockey team will played in the area at least during the 2023-2024 season, but the hockey club is no longer in operation and not a part of the NHL. The Arizona Coyotes struggled with financial stability and arena issues for much of the hockey club’s history. The team was founded as the Winnipeg Jets in 1971 in the WHA league. The Jets joined the NHL in 1979 and relocated to Phoenix in 1996 where they were renamed the Phoenix Coyotes and in 2014 renamed the Arizona Coyotes. Despite multiple changes in ownership, the team faced ongoing challenges, including a period under NHL control from 2009 to 2013 due to bankruptcy. After negotiations with Glendale fell through, the team moved to Arizona State University’s Mullett Arena for the 2022–23 season, but a proposed new arena in Tempe was rejected by voters in 2023. Unable to secure a viable venue, the Coyotes suspended operations after the 2023–24 season. The NHL split the franchise’s assets, transferring players and staff to the new Utah Hockey Club in Salt Lake City. Team owner Alex Meruelo retained the Coyotes’ brand, but eventually abandoned plans to revive the team.
